An exceptionally rare and well-preserved set of antique 19th century pressed seaweed herbarium specimens, sourced from Carmel-by-the-Sea, 1859. Seaweed collecting first became popular during the Victorian era when it became socially acceptable for women to go swimming or "bathing." Samples in this collection include red algae (Rhodophyta), as indicated by its delicate, reddish-pink color, Feather-weed (Ptilota) with it's highly branched, feathery appearance, Siphon Weed (Polysiphonia), and Dulse (Palmaria palmata).
